Back in 2006, Ford delivered what was then the hottest Focus you could buy, the XR5 Turbo.
It offers a great all-around package that is still a real hoot to drive.
Made in Germany, the XR5 Turbo used the standard Focus five-door hatchback body but added a body kit to give it the sporty looks the model needed.
The other big change was a move to attractive 18-inch alloy wheels with low-profile rubber.
Ford offered the car in a range of wild colors. This one is blue which suits the character and also gives the XR5 a visual lift over the standard Focus.
Under the bonnet is where the real magic is.
The standard Focus's four-cylinder engine was ditched and replaced with a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder double overhead camshaft unit lifted from Volvo.
Even that wasn't enough for Ford, which then turbocharged the engine for a rather stirring 166kW of power and 320Nm of torque.
Throw in a six-speed manual gearbox and you had yourself an XR5 Turbo.
The power figures might have been on par with other red-hot hatchbacks but the Ford wasn't quite as in-your-face.
It went hard when you pinned the throttle to the floor but it was also super-driveable in all conditions as a result.
As for the handling, the XR5 went for good ride quality and safe handling.
On rough roads the ride quality comes into its own and when you're simply tootling about the suburbs (as most cars do for 90 per cent of their time on the road) that flexible, relaxed performance is soothing rather than a source of frustration at not being able to let the thing off its leash.
And let's not be accused of damning with faint praise: get serious and it's still a terrific driver's car.
Safety gear consisted of six airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control. Convenience equipment was pretty well laid-on, too.
Meanwhile, the Volvo-sourced engine seems tough as nails and the turbocharger doesn't seem to affect its ability to soldier on. Gearbox problems are all but unknown and the clutch is strong.
